The lower part of the fortified village of Menaggio was constituted by the "Fortress" which ended with two towers on the lake. Inside a mighty Romanesque column, a plan "sporto" and ancient "prisons" tell us about the age of the building, from which, by tradition, departtivano underground links that reached the castle, dominating the town.
