Boat trip from Menaggio to Como

Como’s boat dock is right in the centre of the town facing Piazza Cavour from where you can take a walk to dicover the historical centre of the town. From Piazza Cavour, created in 1871 when the old port was filled in, walk to Piazza Duomo, the city’s civic and religious centre in the Middle Ages. Here you find the Broletto, the antique town hall built in 1200 and the Municipal bell tower. The Cathedral was built between the end of 1300 and the mid 1700’s and is a fusion of different architectural styles. The façade statues are astonishing.

Behind the Duomo it is possible to admire the neaclassical facade of the Teatro Sociale (Social Theatre) built in 1811. On the other side of the railway line is the ex Casa del Fascio masterpiece of the rationalist architect Giuseppe Terragni considered the symbol of modern architecture.

From Piazza Duomo walk to Piazza S. Fedele, one of the most charming parts of Como. Here stands the beautiful Romanesque Basilica of San Fedele. From here proceed to Porta Torre, one of the best preserved remains of the medieval city wall. A lively street market is held along the city walls every Saturday and Tuesday- and Thursday morning.

Walk back to the lake where you find the neoclassic Voltiano temple erected in 1927 for the centennial of the death of Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery, born in Como. Next to the temple is the War Memorial constructed in 1933 based on the designs of futuristic architect Antonio Sant’Elia. From here walk along the lake to
the gardens of Villa Olmo in order to admire the beautiful neoclassical villas on the lake shore. On the town map of Como, available at the Tourist Office, the main monuments are indicated.

A ride with the funicular to Brunate gives you an extraordinary view of the town.
