From Menaggio we take the boat towards Como to get off at Argegno, a characteristic village located at the entrance to the Val d’Intelvi. The route that touches Bellagio, Tremezzo, Lenno, Lezzeno, Isola Comacina, Sala Comacina and Colonno, allows us to admire these beautiful villages from the lake with their villas and elegant buildings that have made Lake Como famous throughout the world.
Description
Argegno is a small, picturesque town situated at the mouth of the Telo stream, at the beginning of the Intelvi Valley that connects Lake Como with Lake Lugano. In front of the town the lake reaches its maximum depth of 410 m.
Argegno is divided into two parts: the lake side promenade and the historic centre. Along the first, there is a succession of cafés and restaurants where you can relax overlooking the lake. The second part is perched on a rocky spur and is characterized by narrow alleyways and stone houses. Between the two parts of the town lies the small central square “Piazza Roma” and an elegant small medieval bridge (XII century). From here, in about 40 minutes, you can walk up to the small 16thcentury Church of St. Anna by following the track on the left side (south) of the Telo stream. Once, along this track, there were mills for grinding wheat, corn and chestnuts and in spring processions were held to propitiate the harvest. At the end of the path, a short flight of steps leads to the grassy yard where the small Sanctuary stands, and from where you have a beautiful view of the lake.
Another recommended excursion from Argegno is the ascent by cable car to Pigra, a small mountain village (900 m) situated on a green plateau from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake and surrounding mountains. The cable car connects the lake to Pigra in about five minutes, with a vertical climb of 600 m. and a maximum gradient of 95%. For schedules, fees and more information contact the tourist office. There is a nice walk of about half an hour set out through this charming mountain village called “Scopri Pigra”. From Pigra one can take a beautiful hike (for experienced hikers) of 2 hrs. down to the lake and the village of Colonno.
