The former station was the terminus of the narrow-gauge railway Menaggio-Porlezza (1884-1939) built on a project by engineer Emilio Olivieri. The line played an important role in the tourist and commercial sector, providing a stable connection between Lario, Ceresio and Verbano, by means of the Ponte Tresa-Luino stretch and integrated with the services offered by the Navigazione Lago di Lugano.
